My late mother once gave me a ring that had been passed down through generations. She left it to me as her eldest son. My younger brothers never really put much stock in family traditions, so I decided to propose to my girlfriend with this very ring. She was absolutely thrilled. Yet, just a few weeks after I proposed, my brother told me that he wanted to ask his girlfriend to marry him using that same ring.
Sorry, mate, but Ive already proposed with it, I replied.
But how could you give it to someone youve only known a few months? he shouted. And what if you two break up? What happens then?

The wedding went on, but the celebration was, of course, spoiled. My wife was terribly upset. My brother and I didnt speak for six months. Only my youngest brother kept in touch with me.
