My Boyfriend’s Mother Embarrassed Me in Public, Unaware That We Were in a Relationship.

Tonight I finally put pen to paper about what happened at the corner shop on Church Street. Im nineteen, trying to stand on my own two feet, so Id taken on extra shifts whenever I could. My mum and dad were pleased I was juggling a parttime job while studying, saving a few quid for a new laptop and maybe a short break down in the Lake District. Oliver, the lad whose house is just down the road, worked there too, although he never seemed to need a paycheck. Hed pop in after school, and we struck up a conversation over the biscuits.

Our friendship grew slowly. Hed bring me a bunch of daffodils from his garden, Id treat him to a packet of Cadburys, and on a few evenings wed linger behind the tills, chatting while the shop was quiet. It felt right, and for a fortnight everything seemed bright.

Then Olivers mother, Mrs. Ethel Whitaker, walked in with him during my evening shift. She didnt notice the cheeky wink Oliver gave me, nor the grin we exchanged. As she approached the till the register jammed and a regular customer, Mrs. Mabel Clarke, started to huff. Ive been coming here a million times, she muttered, and now Im stuck with this lad who cant even give a proper receipt. She called me a swindler, accusing me of trying to steal her money.

See, Oliver, she snapped, thats why you need to hit the books hard, so you never end up mumbling about a stuck till! I felt my cheeks burn as a small queue formed behind us, people Id seen before now glancing my way.

Oliver begged me to forgive his mother, saying shed had a bad day, but I couldnt shake the humiliation. I handed in my notice and left the shop, later landing a placement in Belfast. The pay is lower, the hours longer, but at least Im not dealing with Mrs. Whitakers sharp tongue.

Ive learned that no job is beneath a student, yet dignity isnt something you can bargain for. Even a graduate can find themselves ringing up groceries, but you must never let anyones contempt strip you of selfrespect.
