Mum, your son is a grown man!
Thats exactly what I told my mother-in-law, after she once again asked her son what sort of underwear he was wearing. By the way, he just turned thirty last week. She keeps tabs on every move he makes, and seems to think I amount to nothing.
Im constantly baffled by the extent of her meddling in his life, but Ive now had more than I can bear. Its got to the stage where if his mother doesnt approve of where hes working, my husband will just hand in his notice. When hes between jobs, she gives him money to tide him over. Of course, shes well-off, but Ive no desire to live off anyone else’s fortune while my perfectly healthy husband stands by.
The other day, we were getting ready to attend a wedding. My husband bought himself a new suit, reasonably priced. His mum was furious when she saw itbecause it didnt have the right designer label. She thrust some cash at him and demanded he buy a new one.
Recently, she gifted us a flat, but its all in her name. Im not particularly bothered about that, but she decorates the place entirely to her own tastes. How am I supposed to feel at home if I cant even choose a loo seat?
Were meant to be grateful to her, of course. But it always feels as though shes making a point, reminding us who holds all the cards. She does everything for her son, and he doesnt seem to mind in the leasthell never utter a word against her.
A few weeks back, my mum came to visit. She lives in the countryside and planned to stay with us. When my husband saw her, he said,
Lets make Mum a cup of tea and then call a taxi to take her to Aunties.
It turned out that my mother-in-law had told him to keep my mum away from me, convinced shed be a bad influence.
My mum has relatives in London, but she travelled all this way to see me; she ought to be able to stay at mine.
So, do you know what I did? I packed my bags and left with my mum. I regret nothingat last, Ive stopped bending over backwards to please anyone else.
Never tie yourself to a mummys boy; itll never end well!
