Mum, everything was fine this morning, began the daughter, sobbing again and again, but in the afternoon someone called Frank.

Helen returned home, tension etched deeply into her face. Earlier that day, she had gone to visit her daughter. When she unlocked the door and stepped inside, she was struck by chaosthe flat was in disarray, as if a storm had passed through. Her daughter, Emily, was curled up on the living room floor, sobbing uncontrollably. The air felt heavy with pain.

Ive had a blazing row with James, Emily choked out through her tears, her face blotchy and red. I told him to leave. Hes gone, Mum. I dont know what to do.

Helen stood there, dumbfounded. Shed always believed Emily and James had a good life together, raising their two little ones in the home theyd only just bought with a hefty mortgage. Helen simply couldnt fathom what could have possibly gone so wrong.

Mum, it was all perfectly fine this morning, Emily began, her voice trembling as she fought to steady herself. Then, this afternoon, James got a call. I picked up, thought it might be important, and a womans voice came on the line:

Darling, how much longer do I have to wait? shed said. Startled, Emily asked who was calling, but the stranger promptly hung up and never answered again. Heart pounding, Emily confronted James as soon as he walked in.

James insisted it was nothing. It was a mistake, Em, I swear. You know Id never do that to you.

But Emilys trust was shattered. She couldnt get the womans words out of her mind. In minutes, James packed a bag and walked out, the echo of the slammed door ringing in their empty home.

Helen tried desperately to calm her daughter, hoping perhaps this mess truly was a misunderstanding.

But the next day, her phone rang. Emilys voice was brittle on the other end: James has filed for divorce. He says hell keep paying the mortgagebut who knows? If he doesnt, I wont manage, Mum. Well lose the flat. James had said it would stay in the childrens names, but Emily overheard that his mistress was pressing for a share of the property because she claimed to be expecting his child.

No one could say for sure if that was true or just another twist of the knife. After they separated, James reassured Emily hed cover everything, but it was all just words. He still saw the childrenEmily wouldnt keep their dad from them. But Jamess new partner hated it. Now, even the mortgage felt uncertain.

Every so often, Emily caught sight of James; he looked worn-out and older than his years. He was clearly exhausted by the drama and the demands of the other woman, the looming birth weighing down on him, too. In those moments, Helens heart broke not just for her daughter, but for the wreckage left behind by dreams gone wrong.
