After we got married, my wife and I were looking for options for renting an apartment. One of them suited us best because it was close to my grandmother Maria. When my wife was little, her grandmother raised her. Maria’s mother was always working abroad and rarely came home, so she and my wife treated each other like friends. Moreover, my mother often called my wife and reproached her for something, so there were misunderstandings between them. My wife and I were not in a hurry to have children, because we did not have our own home yet, we were just setting up a rented one.
I fell in love with my grandmother as if she were my own. She was a very kind and wise woman who always understood and supported us. She was able to raise my wife in such a way that I was proud of her and never doubted her for a minute. That’s why we were often her guests.
Not long ago, Maria’s mother returned from working abroad. And it so happened that not only did Maria have a bad relationship with her mother, but her mother-in-law and grandmother as well. When she arrived, her grandmother said she didn’t want her in her house. So Maria’s mother came to us with her suitcases. Of course, we couldn’t let her out the door. Fortunately, we had two rooms, so we offered her to stay with us.
We agreed to stay with our mother-in-law for a while, but for six months she did not say a word about looking for a place to live or planning to move out. And lately, she’s been feeling right at home. She started bringing her friends over and staying up late with them, forgetting that my wife and I had to go to work in the morning. She did nothing around the house either.
She ate whatever my wife and I bought and cooked, refused to even wash the dishes after herself, saying that she was visiting.
In addition, my mother-in-law always tried to point out my wife’s mistakes. Even when Maria and I were quarreling with each other, my mother-in-law would come running to tell her that she was wrong. Once my wife couldn’t stand it any longer and told my mother that no one asked her opinion. Of course, she was very offended by this.
But Maria did not want to apologize. She said that she should have been given advice and educated in her childhood, and now there was no need to try to regain what was lost. My mother-in-law overheard this and made a real scandal about disrespecting my parents. I couldn’t stand it anymore. I asked my mother-in-law to find a new place to live. Then she started screaming and saying that my daughter had to look after her.
– “Why should I look after you? You are nothing to me! My grandmother was with me all my childhood, not you!” my wife could not help but shout.
Then the mother-in-law went to her room, packed her things and left. At first, we wanted to maintain normal relations with Maria’s mother, but she has no right to come into someone else’s home and feel like she’s in charge. A year has passed since these events, and the mother-in-law has not made herself known again, and we are not seeking to resume communication with her either.
