When I married Emily, we did not have our own place to live, so for a while, we had to stay with her mother – Margaret Peterson. My parents lived in another city, and my job was here, so we practically had no other choice.
At first, everything was fine, especially after our children were born. My mother-in-law helped us a lot, for which I was very grateful to her. However, over time, the situation began to spiral out of control. Margaret Peterson is absolutely obsessed with cats, and one day, she brought two more furry pets into our already small apartment.
Now there is fur everywhere, the smell in the apartment is unbearable, and my shoes are constantly being ruined by these “adorable creatures.” The children are suffering – the younger one even started having allergic reactions, but my mother-in-law considered all of this to be minor inconveniences.
Emily endured it for a long time, but one day, her patience ran out. She directly told her mother:
– Either we stay, or your cats!
I expected an emotional reaction, maybe an argument or at least an attempt to find a compromise. But Margaret Peterson calmly replied:
– Well then, I suppose it is time for you to find your own place. My cats are like my children, and I will not give them up.
We were stunned. We were literally asked to move out because of these furry animals!
Now Emily and I are trying to figure out what to do next. Did we really go too far? Or is it normal to value pets more than family?
