Many years ago, Mark returned home one afternoon only to be struck by a troubling sightthe house was eerily silent, and his wife was nowhere to be seen. Even more unsettling was the absence of their one-year-old son. Surprise and worry began to gnaw at his heart. Determined to find some answers, Mark made his way to the neighbouring cottage to inquire after his wifes whereabouts. To his astonishment, the neighbour emerged holding Marks son in his arms.
It transpired that Marks wife had entrusted their boy to the neighbours care before departing on urgent business. Though Mark was familiar enough with the routines of tending to a child, he couldnt help but wonder what would prompt his wife to leave so suddenly. Nevertheless, he felt a trace of gratitude upon discovering she had left a meal warming in the oven.
The minutes stretched into half an hour, then an hour, then two, then five, and Marks anxiety grew ever more acute. He tried again and again to reach his wife by telephone, but she failed to answer his many calls. As each hour passed, his worry only deepened. Eventually, he managed to settle his son to sleep, all the while waiting for some sign from his wife.
Finally, late into the evening, Mark received the long-awaited call. With relief and a dozen questions, he answered, anxiously pressing his wife about where she had gone and what had happened during the day. To his dismay, she sidestepped all his questions, finally informing him she had no intention of returning home. She had decided, she said, to leave their son with Mark for good.
Stunned and distressed, Mark could scarcely believe what he was hearing. He clung to the phone, hoping against hope it was some harsh jest. But the reality settled in with cruel finality, leaving him restless and uncertain. Now Mark faced the heavy burden of raising his son alone, taking on both mother and father roles, determined to give his child a loving upbringing despite the hardships.
