What a day that was. I was wandering through Oakwood, collecting fallen branches to keep the fireplace going, when I overheard voices that set my curiosity alight. Peering through the brambles, I spotted my son with a young womanEmily was her name. They were in the midst of a heated exchange; she was clearly upset about hiding their relationship, insisting that they wait another month before making any sort of decision.
As I stood there, listening in, the words seemed to wound my son. I made my way home, my mind already churning over what I would say to him. While chopping logs and boiling a pot of potatoes for our evening meal, I couldnt help but wait anxiously for him to return. He got home far sooner than Id expected.
I told him straight: What on earth are you playing at, son? Why did you feel the need to keep Emily a secret from me? Shes exactly the sort of daughter-in-law any father would wish forsensible, careful with money, and a genuinely good person. And you treat her poorly. I wont tolerate it! I wont allow her to be disrespectedleast of all by you! Caught off guard by my outburst, he fired back something under his breath and stormed out of the house, grabbing a few apples on his way and slamming the door.
Things were tense after that, both between my son and Emily, and between the two of us. Matters only grew worse after their last meeting, when Emily bravely insisted that their relationship shouldnt be kept in the shadows any longer. My son tried to reason with her, but it only led to further arguments. This time, she demanded that he propose to her outright.
Fed up with all this turmoil, I decided it was time for action. Without my sons knowledge, I paid a visit to Emilys parents and together, we quietly set wedding plans in motion. We told Emily that my son had set off on a quick trip to London, supposedly to fetch some car parts for our neighbour.
When he returned, there was Emily, waiting for him at home. He was utterly confused. Why are you here? he asked her, completely bewildered. With her usual confidence, Emily replied, I live here now! Didnt you mean to marry me? In our village, these sorts of surprise arrangements werent exactly unheard of.
At first, my son was furious with me for meddling. But in time, he saw that no one else could have made a better partner than Emily. They grew closer, found true happiness, and, eventually, my son came to appreciate what Id done for them, realising that my only intention was to look out for them both.
