Living Together with My Dear Mum: At 57, I Celebrate Simple Joys Side by Side with My 86-Year-Old Mother, Cherishing Our Peaceful Life and Hoping It Lasts as Long as Possible

I live together with my mother. She is 86 years old.

Life has turned out in an unusual way for me. I never married and I don’t have children. Now, Im 57, and I recently celebrated my birthday. It was just the two of us, my mum and me. There isnt anyone I could invite over. I dont have close friends, and my mum and I have no other family.

We share our home and always support one another. Mum is 86, and I dont know what Ill do when shes gone. Yet, shes in such good spirits! Despite her age and her health slowly declining each year, she doesnt give up. She even goes for walks on her own.

I’m retired, but I still work, as our pensions never seem quite enough to get by. Still, I dont let it get me down and I feel grateful to have my dear mum with me. After all, there are people who have it much worse some are without a home, any family, or any money at all.

Mum and I live a quiet, peaceful life. In the evenings, we drink tea, knit together, and watch our favourite films and television shows. On weekends, I bake cakes and we invite a few neighbours round. They share stories about their families. Their happiness makes me glad, and I pray that no trouble ever comes to me or my mum.

Thats how we live. I hope this life can last as long as possible for both me and my motherSometimes, after the cake crumbs are swept away and night settles outside, Mum takes my hand and squeezes it. Her fingers are thin, but her grip is strong, reminding me how love endures even when everything else fades. And in those quiet moments, I realize the world may not know our names, but within these walls, joy finds its place in small, simple thingswarm laughter, shared secrets, the soft hush of knitting needles. We are not alone, not truly. As our story continues, I find comfort in each sunrise and, above all, in the gentle certainty that togetherjust the two of usour days are enough.
