An adorable border collie puppy named Lucy is a big fan of fun, and her favorite activity is spending time at the beach with her family and playing with her favorite tennis ball. While enjoying one of these outings, something changed for Lucy and the pleasant time she was having was interrupted by a mischievous octopus who stole her precious ball.
While on the beach near her home in South Africa, Lucy and her favorite tennis ball apparently attracted the attention of a rather curious octopus. The octopod decided to approach, attracted by a particular object; Lucy had no idea what would happen next. Riette Creighton, Lucy’s mother, told The Dodo:
“High tide was coming in, and suddenly this octopus swam into the shallow water.”
Having the octopus so close to her, and in the midst of her surprise, Lucy dropped her tennis ball into the water, and immediately the octopus reached out one of its limbs and grabbed it for himself. Now the tennis ball had been stolen, and Lucy amid her surprise could only watch it all happen.
Riette recounts:
“Suddenly we saw “the octopus” grabbing the ball. I think my reaction was the same as Lucy’s! I’d never experienced anything like that – this was the next level!”.
Everyone watched in amazement as the octopus seemed to be having as much fun with the tennis ball as Lucy usually does. And of course he had no intention of returning it to its owner at all. So after a short time of playing with the ball near the water’s edge, the octopus finally went home with his new toy, much to Lucy’s sadness.
Riette was stunned, and when she got home she decided to share her experience, so she made a Facebook post narrating everything that happened. People’s reactions were not long in coming and her story quickly went viral on the internet.
The woman wrote:
“Today in Davies Pool!!! I was playing fetch with my little dog when suddenly this ‘little guy’ intercepted the ball and disappeared with it! Probably playing fetch with Nemo and Dory!”. He must have secured the tennis ball pretty well with his tentacles to carry it to the depths of the sea, as they tend to float very easily due to their material.
Riette said:
“He wrapped his tentacle around the ball and disappeared! We stood there for about 20 minutes, waiting for the ball to surface, but we had no luck – it was gone!”.
