Kind Strangers: Finding Family in a New Home

There are kind people: I found a family in a foreign home

Three years ago, I moved to London from a small provincial town. I didn’t know anyone here. The streets were unfamiliar, the pace of life was hectic, and everyone seemed like strangers.

I was scared.

I knew I was starting a new chapter in my life, but deep down, I felt lost.

But Aunt Vera, it was then you said to me:
— Don’t worry, my dear, we’ll help you. We’ll be like parents to you.

You already knew I didn’t have parents.

They’re alive, but for me, they no longer existed. They did everything to drive a wedge between me and Eve. They opposed our love, belittled her, pressured me to make a choice. I couldn’t forgive them for that.

Thankfully, I had Grandma. The only person who always supported me. Thanks to her, I could afford to rent a place and avoid living in a dormitory.

But if it weren’t for you and Uncle Mike, I’m not sure how I would have coped during those first tough months.

You became family to me

I remember that first day of college.

It was you, Aunt Vera, who asked Uncle Mike to take me to university by car, so I could get used to the route. I remember how after classes he was waiting for me at the entrance with some ice cream — it was unbearably hot, and he wanted to cheer me up.

When we got back home, the house smelled of fresh pastries.

You baked your special homemade goods and invited me to dinner. The next day, you did it again. And then, it became a tradition.

I listened to my classmates complain about their mean and greedy landlords, high prices, and constant troubles. But I proudly spoke of you.

They couldn’t believe people like you still existed.

You offered me not just a roof over my head, but warmth

I will never forget my first Student Day — December 8th.

In the evening, the door rang.

I opened it… and there was Eve.

And just a little further back stood Uncle Mike, smiling mischievously.

It turns out that you and he found her, talked to her, convinced her to come back to me, and brought her here by car.

I couldn’t believe it!

Even my real family had never shown such care, such genuine support.

If it weren’t for you, Eve might never have come to this city. She might not have enrolled here. We wouldn’t be together.

But you did more than just reunite us.

You accepted her, just as you accepted me. You didn’t raise the rent or create obstacles. You were simply there.

And for that, I am grateful.

You taught me how to be a man

Uncle Mike, I admire you.

You didn’t just help me survive in this city. You showed me what it means to be a man, to take responsibility for one’s life.

You helped me find a good job, so I no longer need to rely on Grandma’s help.

You taught me important things — not through words, but deeds.

You showed me how to do things right in life.

And now, I feel stronger.

We’ll make you proud as you’ve made us happy

Yesterday, Eve and I remembered an old song where the main character gets a cup of coffee with a croissant from the landlady every morning.

And we decided: from the New Year, we’ll greet you in the mornings with fragrant coffee.

That’s all we can do for you right now.

But rest assured, we’ll thank you in the way you truly deserve.

And now – our biggest gift

Finally, we decided to relay this news via letter.

Eve is pregnant!

When we saw those two lines on the test, we just screamed with joy.

You got worried then, thinking we were arguing…

No, it was happiness!

Once, you gave me a chance. Then you helped bring Eve back to me.

Now it’s time to welcome a new life.

We’re sure you’ll be as happy as we are.

Our baby is due in August.

And if it weren’t for you, perhaps none of this would have happened.

Thank you.

Take care of yourselves, my dear ones. Without you, our lives wouldn’t be as bright.
