Many years ago, Emily hailed from a quiet English village, where a modest one-bedroom flat could be had for very little. She managed to purchase such a place, all without her husbands knowledge. While her husband was away on business, their daughter was born. Emily had her child in the local NHS hospital, but told her husband the birth had actually taken place in a private clinic for the well-to-do. And truth be told, Emily was exceptionally careful with every shilling he sent for household costs.
When her husband was home, the larder overflowed with meats, fish, and treats from the finest grocers. Yet, the moment he departed, she returned to her careful thrift, making every penny stretch.
Not once did she buy new clothes or toys for their girl. Kind townsfolk would pitch in with hand-me-downs, or shed find necessities at jumble sales and on car boot sites. In this manner, she slowly squirrelled away savings for that humble flat. Oftentimes, Emily would invite her mother from the countryside to mind the little one whilst she took on work behind her husbands back. In truth, the blame lay with him. Emily met every demand he made, dutifully and quietly, for she was a villager at heart, married to a Londoner who forever barked orders.
One day, Emily realised the time had come to prepare her escape. She understood, deep down, that one day her husbands temper would get the better of him, and then she and her daughter would be lost.
For years she juggled the household accounts with cunning. She might bring home just a few apples for her little one, yet report to her husband that shed bought a full stone. It took two and a half long years of this patience and scrimping before she had saved enough. Finally, while he was away again on business, she packed what she could carry, gathered up her daughter, and slipped quietly away. The day before, she had filed for divorce.
Of course, he tried to find them, to win them back. Hed ring her, first promising a new, brighter family life free from shadow. But on occasion, his voice carried threats, swearing he would never cease in his pursuit to take them back, no matter the consequence.
Soon enough, word reached Emily that he had taken up with a university student. She was certain he treated the new girl exactly as hed treated her.
Emily never betrayed him; the money she carefully set aside, she counted as honestly earned. Shed gone hungry to save it, and truly, she saw no other path. She did what she could to save herselfand, more importantly, her only daughter.
