As Jack strode into the bustling office that morning, he was taken aback by the commotion. His colleagues were gathered around, laughing and popping party poppers, the scent of cake hanging in the air. Is today some sort of holiday? Jack wondered, scanning the room with confusion.
He caught sight of Mark, who grinned, his eyes shining brighter than Jack had ever seen. Were celebrating! Mark declared. My wife is finally expectingwe just found out this morning! The news spread like wildfire, and everyone cheered, slapping Mark on the back and offering congratulations. Joy flooded the atmosphere; Marks soon-to-be fatherhood was a cause for celebration.
Suddenly, one of the other office lads sidled up to Jack with a wry smile. You know, Marks the first bloke Ive ever seen make a fuss about his wife being pregnant. Usually, we celebrate once the baby arrives! Hes a good chap, though. Just you waitnow everyone will begin shoving advice his way and sharing their nightmare stories about being a parent. The man shook his head knowingly. You never really know whats coming, mate.
Jack listened, bemused, as the group jabbered on. When my wife was expecting our first, she had me awake at all hours, running out for whatever she fancied. Youll seeshell bombard him with demands and, before long, hell be less chipper! another old hand chimed in with a chuckle.
How many kids do you have, then? someone else asked, curiosity piqued.
Two, but I couldnt tell you their ages. My daughters about seven or maybe shes six? I lose track sometimes, he replied, shaking his head.
Jack remained quiet then, absorbing the stories, reflecting on what was to come.
Later that evening, Jack returned home. He wrapped his arms around his beloved wife, her smile soft against his shoulder. Its a good thing they dont know at work that youre due in a few days, he whispered, a conspiratorial grin on his lips. Everyone still thinks youve got nine months to go.
I dont think youll be able to keep it to yourself for much longer, she teased.
