It was already nighttime, but her daughter still hadn’t come home. An hour later, she called me in tears, begging to be picked up. My ex-husband and I went together to the address she gave us.

This story is happening to my daughter, whos currently in Year 10. Lately, Ive noticed her acting strangely, which is unlike her usual self. It all started when, one day, she was extremely late getting home from school. I tried calling her, but she didnt pick up. After waiting another hour, I grew quite anxious and reached out to her form tutor. The teacher told me shed left straight after lessons. My worry was increasing rapidly, and all sorts of things were running through my mind.

Charlotte came home late that night. Why didnt you answer my calls? Where have you been? I started asking.

My daughter just gestured to let me know she didnt want to talk. Mum, please dont be upset. I was in town with some mates and my phone died. Im sorry I forgot to let you know.

When she took off her coat, I spotted a brand-new designer t-shirt and some earrings. Charlotte, where did you get those? A friend gave them to me. Which friend? Oh, come on, Mum, Im knackered. Its just a mate, you dont know him. Ill introduce you sometime.

She dashed upstairs and slammed her bedroom door. The situation felt worrying, but I decided to wait and talk in the morning. But the next day, she managed to leave the house in a rush before I got the chance. It seemed like she was dodging the conversation. That day, she was late from school again and wouldnt answer her phone. Evening was closing in and my concern was growing rapidly. Suddenly, the phone rang.

Mum, please, can you come and get me? my daughter cried, barely managing to give me the address before the call cut off. Panic was rising in my chest. I dialled her fathers number with shaking hands.

Usually, I tried to avoid speaking with him, but this was an emergency. He arrived quickly, bringing a few mates along. We drove to the address, which turned out to be a massive manor house, music blaring from inside. My ex-husband and his friends went in and, after a few minutes, brought Charlotte out, crying.

It turned out a boy shed met recently had given her expensive things and promised hed teach her how to earn serious money. To explain, hed invited her to this party. While there, Charlotte realised she was being offered something deeply inappropriate, which made her uncomfortable. She knew, straightaway, shed made a big mistake.

Oh, my silly girl, free cheese is only ever found in a mouse trap, I said softly, stroking her hair and holding her close.
