After two years of dating, Robert proposed to me. We planned to have a small wedding for close relatives and friends. We decided on November. We started preparing.
A few days ago, my future mother-in-law came to visit me. She looked around the apartment in all corners. And then she said that she had to talk to me.
– Julia, my youngest daughter is out of work. She’s going crazy at home. You should arrange a job for her somewhere in your company. You’re the boss, after all. You’ll make a quick deal there – she said unceremoniously.
Yes, I am actually the director of a large firm. And we are even recruiting new employees now. But I saw Robert’s younger sister. And I know for sure – she is not suitable for us. That’s what I said:
– I’m sorry, but I can’t take her. Her education is not what we need and her desire to work is not enough.
The future mother-in-law was offended by my frankness and went home.
Robert came home in the evening. We sat down to dinner.
– Your mother came, – I started the conversation.
– Yes, she said she would drop by. She probably wanted to talk about the wedding or something.
– Don’t lie. You know what she came for.
– Well, yes, in general, – he evaded the answer.
– She wanted me to get your sister a job.
– Is there a problem with that? After all, it’s a future family… And you upset my mother so much…
We argued for a long time. I explained to Robert that I did not want to combine work and personal. These things should be separated. In the end, if his sister had been fired (and I am 100% sure of this), my mother-in-law would have resented me even more. I would have been the last one in this situation anyway.
– So you talked like that? There will be no wedding! My mother was right to say that you are not suitable for me!” – the former groom told me.
With these words, he grabbed the phone, put on a jacket and ran outside.
It was hard for me to believe that Robert could behave like that. I thought he was an adult sensible man. And here…
The next day he came to pick up his things and informed me that he had canceled the reservation for the restaurant where we were going to celebrate our wedding.
Well, maybe it’s for the best!
Do you think it is necessary to separate working relationships from family ones? Should Julia have given the groom’s sister a chance?
