My husband and I toiled tirelessly from the very beginning of our life together. We always hoped our children would have everything they needed, never wanting for anything. After our daughter was born, my husband juggled two jobs, determined to support us. We did our best to raise our daughter to be polite and considerate of others. The years slipped by. Before we knew it, we realised our little girl had grown up.
She was truly stunning. Suitors were never in short supply. Eventually, we noticed our daughter acting more careful and secretive. It took a while, but the reason became clearshe had fallen in love. My husband and I were overjoyed at the news, even begging our daughter to introduce us to her chosen one. We wondered who had been fortunate enough to win her heart. She promised that one day, we would meet him.
Just recently, she told us she was planning to bring her boyfriend home. I spent the whole afternoon in the kitchen, preparing an array of dishes. My husband scrubbed every corner of the flat. We both put in so much effort and waited anxiously for their arrival. I took extra care with my daughter’s dress and hair; she was glowing with happiness, radiant and smiling, almost floating around the house. Seeing her that joyful filled us both with indescribable pride and reliefa parents wish fulfilled.
He finally arrived, making a rather good impression. Polite, witty, easy to talk to. We invited them to the table. Yet something bothered me all eveningan uneasy feeling that Id seen that young mans face somewhere before. No matter how much I tried, I couldnt place him. The night went on cheerfully, with plenty of conversation and laughter. My daughters boyfriend was charming and open, and we relaxed considerably.
But as soon as theyd left, it struck me like a bolt of lightning. Id seen his photograph in a police noticehim and another man, wanted for fraud. The flier said to report their whereabouts immediately. I rushed to tell my husband and our daughter. She burst into tears, insisting Id made it all up to ruin things.
That simply wasnt true. I had only wanted to protect her from possible harm. Of course we cared who she chose to spend her life with. In response, our daughter packed her belongings and walked out the door without another word.
Its been a month since we last heard from her. She doesnt answer our calls. Now Im overwhelmed by doubtwhat if I was mistaken, and her young man is actually a decent person after all?
