My husband and I have been married for seven years. Weve had a good lifetruly a wonderful one. My husband was successful in business, allowing me the freedom to work purely for pleasure. Yet, for all those seven years, wed never had children. One day, my husband surprised me by booking a lavish holiday abroad for an entire month at an exclusive seaside resort. I was absolutely over the moon. But just a few days before we were due to leave, he told me urgent business negotiations had come upones that could affect our futureand that Id have to go without him. Of course, I was devastated. Id planned every moment, picturing the two of us together in that idyllic paradise. He suggested I take my closest friend, so I wouldnt be lonelyand, besides, she could use a break.
Life hadnt been easy for my friend. Her mum was fond of drinking and never really paid her much attention, nor cared much for her future. She fell pregnant right after finishing school, married in haste, and her husbandhed visit, then cause a great commotion, shouting and arguing. When I told her about the holiday, she was overjoyedtruly grateful to my husband.
A month later, when I returned, my husband was waiting for me at Heathrow with the car. At home, a gorgeous candlelit dinner was set out, and our bed was scattered with rose petals. In short, everything was perfect.
Two weeks afterwards, I told my husband I was expecting. He was so happy, his eyes shining with pride. But when the day finally came and I went into labour, off to the hospital, my friend dashed to my husband and told him Id been away for a whole month, claimed Id been unfaithful, and that the child wasnt his. When I heard this, I was destroyed. I thought no one would come to fetch me on the day I left hospitalthat Id have nowhere to go with my baby. But it was the complete opposite. My husband came to us, saw the little girl. He could tell she didnt resemble himbut he simply gathered her into his arms and raised her as his own. That very day, he told my friend to leave, to never darken our door again, and to forget about us forever.
