I Spent Two Years Abroad, and Upon My Return, I Discovered My Son Had a “Surprise” Waiting for Me

Ive been living abroad for two years, and when I finally return to the UK I discover that my son has a surprise waiting for me.

My daughter, Emily, married a man from another part of the country and I moved in with them for two years, looking after my grandson and keeping the house tidy. Emily and her husband, William, work for the same company and only get home in the evenings. I hoped that arrangement would continue, but it didnt. One afternoon they tell me they no longer need my help and ask me to leave the flat. A month later Im back in my own house, only to find that Im not welcome there either. While I was staying with my daughter, my son, James, split up with his first wife, abandoned her flat, and moved into my former home.

Hes also brought his second wife, Sarah, who is already expecting. He never asked my permission. What should I do? Throw James and his pregnant wife out? Thats not an option. How are the three of us soon to be four supposed to live in a onebedroom flat? Neither James nor I have enough money to rent somewhere else; were short on cash. I called Emily to explain the situation, hoping shed understand and invite me back, but she didnt. They see the world differently.

Jamess behaviour makes sense to him; he never expected me to return. Now I sleep on the kitchen couch while he and Sarah go about their day, chatting normally, yet Sarah ignores me completely. Its obvious she doesnt want me around. I never imagined that at sixtyfour Id feel useless, with someone else running my home. James thinks only of his pregnant wife and doesnt consider the housing problem at all.

Im looking for parttime work and want to manage my own flat again. The new inlaws live out in the countryside. Should I tell Sarah to move back with her parents? Could James find a job out there? Im not sure. Im stuck not knowing what to do next.
