I had just settled into my grandfather’s apartment, started renovating, and my parents encouraged me to sell it for a profit.

Max wasn’t particularly offended when it turned out that Grandpa had bequeathed his two-room apartment to me. He was only sixteen at the time, he was too young to think about moving, and besides, he didn’t like the location of Grandpa’s apartment, and he was claiming his parents’ property. I would have been all for it – I could have my grandfather’s apartment, and he could live in his parents’ in the future. Except that no sooner had my brother turned seventeen than Mom and Dad started trying to get me to sell the apartment.

At first I didn’t understand the motivation. They know that I had already started the repairs, and that I had invested a lot of money from my savings into the purchase of materials. They do not want to live in the apartment themselves. So why sell?

I suspected it was because of Max. He’ll think of something. Maybe he needs to go to school, or maybe he’s changed his mind about the apartment and now he wants to get something out of granddad’s.

– You could buy something smaller instead. Why do you need two rooms now? – Dad reasoned.
– And then what am I going to do, sell again and try to stretch it into a two-room? I have a girlfriend, we need another room, – I answered.

Then after Dad, Mom started hinting. She said that we could sell and put the money on deposit to exaggerate the capital.

I didn’t understand what they were walking around about, until Max himself called me and told me not to think about selling the apartment. Mom and Dad got into debt because they bought a car, which Dad wrecked the first week. Now they want to either repair or buy a new one, because they haven’t had time to take out the insurance yet, and they’re trying to cheat me out of money like that. If I buy a one-bedroom, I’ll have extra money and they can “borrow” the amount they need.

I would not want to sell the apartment, but my brother’s words once again confirmed that I should not listen to mom and dad. They are kindred people, but they are so devious as to cheat me out of money.
