James is wrapping up his studies at Oxford, and he decides this is the perfect moment to marry his first love from college, Emily. Emily is pretty, but shes also kind-hearted and clever. At the moment, shes working on her dissertation. The young couple agree to tie the knot as soon as she completes her degree.
James breaks the news of the wedding to his mother, but she doesnt bring good tidings. She tells him that he must marry Sarah from next door, or no one at all. Then she presses him, asking whats more important: his career or his heart? Jamess mother dreams of him rising to be someone distinguished and respected.
Sarah comes from a well-off family, and shes secretly harboured feelings for James for quite a while, but his heart is set on Emily, whose background is rather less favourable. Emilys mother has a bad reputation in the village… What would the neighbours say?

James pleads with her for ages, but she is immovable. Eventually, she warns, if he marries Emily, shell disown him forever. James loses his nerve. He and Emily continue seeing each other for another six months, but their relationship slowly fades away.
Eventually, James marries Sarah. She is truly in love with him, but they dont have a big celebrationJames doesnt want Emily to see any wedding pictures. Sarahs family is rather wealthy, so James moves into her parents grand country house. Her parents lend a hand to boost his career as well. Still, James is never happy.
James refuses to have children. When Sarah finally realises shell never change his mind, she files for divorce on her own. By that time, James is forty, and Sarah is thirty-eight. Later on, Sarah marries again, has a child, and finds real happiness.
James still dreams about what life would have been like with Emily. He tries to find her, but she seems to have vanished into thin air. Eventually, an old friend reveals the truth: after their split, Emily married the first man she met, who turned out to be violent. He beat her to death.
Afterwards, James moves into his parents old flat and drinks himself into oblivion. He gazes endlessly at an old photo of Emily, and finds himself unable to forgive his mother.
