So listen, you wont believe what happened with Mark. He was finishing up at university and suddenly had this mad idea to marry his first proper girlfriend from sixth form, Sophie. Sophie was beautiful, and besides that she was just genuinely lovely and clever. Turns out she was just wrapping up her dissertation at the same time as Mark. They made this pact to get married as soon as they both handed in their dissertations.
Mark decided hed tell his mum about the whole wedding idea, but sadly, she was having none of it. She basically told him that he could marry Lucy from next door, or no one at all. Then she asked him what he cared about more: his career or love? She always pictured Mark becoming somebody big.
Lucy was from a rich family, and shed fancied Mark for ages, but he was hooked on Sophie, and Sophie didnt really have much family history or anything. And to be honest, people in town always whispered about Sophies mum What would everyone say?
I dont need another daughter-in-law and you can do what you like! Thats what Marks mum told him.
Mark spent ages trying to change her mind, but she just wouldnt budge, and eventually she threatened that if he married Sophie, shed curse the marriage. Mark just lost his nerve after that. He and Sophie dated for about half a year, but slowly things faded between them.
In the end, he married Lucy. She was honestly head over heels for him but they both decided not to bother with a wedding. Mark couldnt stand the thought of Sophie seeing wedding snaps floating around. Thats how they started living together. To be fair, Lucy had money and Mark moved into her familys enormous place. His folks helped him get a nice job, moving up in the worldbut he was never actually happy.
Mark never wanted kids. When Lucy finally realised he was never going to change his mind, she ended up filing for divorce herself. By then Mark was well into his forties, and Lucy was thirty-eight. After everything, Lucy eventually had a baby and ended up truly content.
Mark always wished hed married Sophie. He tried to find her, but shed just vanished. Turns out, through someone they both knew, after they broke up she married the first bloke she came across and he ended up being a nightmare.
After all that, Mark moved back into his parents old flat and started just drinking himself into oblivion. Hed sit there staring at Sophies old photo, never able to forgive his mum for what happened.
