-“I don’t even know how this will end… I’m so worried about Chris,” Gwen sighed.
-“Who would have thought it would be like this… Still, it’s our own fault,” Edward concluded sadly.
…Gwen and Edward got married right after graduation. They lived well, together, as they say, soul to soul.
But they had one cloud on the happy family sky: Gwen could not get pregnant.
They really wanted a baby, both dreamed, believed that it did not matter who would be born, a boy or a girl, as long as the desired pregnancy finally came.
They went for check-ups: everything was normal. However, the coveted second strip on the test did not appear.
By the age of thirty, desperate Gwen suddenly realized that she was expecting a child. She just realized, without any tests. It was too early to draw conclusions, but with a special female sense she already felt that soon their old dream with her husband would come true.
And indeed. Nine months later, a charming baby girl was born. Parents adored their daughter, just blew the dust off her.
From early childhood Mary was used to getting everything she wanted and even more. However, despite being spoiled, she grew up quite positive, diligent and intelligent.
She obeyed her parents and there were no special problems with her. Even in adolescence, she did not show any “rebellious mood”, just grew up and turned into a pretty girl.
Her parents instilled in her an interest in science and art, tried to raise a well-read child with a broad outlook.
Mary studied well, graduated from school, entered the institute. In this matter she also relied on her parents and did not argue when they chose her profession.
-“Enter the economics department,” her mother said, “Economists are always needed.
And so Mary did.
Gwen herself worked in a research institute, her husband, Edward, too, and all their surroundings were from the scientific environment.
Very intelligent.
Mary also grew up intelligent, but very selfish. As she grew older, she showed this character trait more and more.
Shortly after graduation Mary met a young man. They began to meet, but he did not come home to them yet.
Gwen insisted that her daughter finally introduce her parents to her fiancé.
The daughter grimaced and said that she would introduce him somehow…
Only he is not a fiancé at all, but just… And she has not decided anything yet.
True, that fool is head over heels in love with her and has long been calling for marriage, but does it make sense?
Gwen was a little surprised by such speeches. She asked if Mary loved him.
The girl, condescendingly looking at her mother, answered:
-Mom! Well, what are you, like in the movies, straight! What love? Does it exist at all?
Gwen decided not to continue the strange conversation, and thought that she and Mary’s father still had a very tender relationship.
And love has not diminished over the years, but rather even strengthened and turned into a real full-fledged, all-consuming feeling.
And the daughter… Well, apparently, she has not yet met her destiny. When she does, she will understand what love is.
However, a month later Mary brought home that guy and said she was going to get married.
Her parents were a little surprised. The guy looked somehow pale against the background of bright Mary. He was plain, lanky, slouched all the time.
In the corridor, he managed to throw all the things off the bedside table, stepped on his scarf with a dirty shoe and dropped his phone.
Mary laughed, shook off and handed the boy the scarf, returned all the things back and, kissing the reddened young man on the cheek, condescendingly said:
-You are such a slob! But that’s okay, some of us must have flaws!
At these words, the parents were already embarrassed and did not know where to hide their eyes. They liked the boy, but their daughter behaved a bit impudently with him, and they were ashamed of her.
Soon they met the boy’s parents, Chris. They lived in a nearby city, rather not even in the city, but in a small town and were simple people.
Mom worked in dry cleaning at the reception center, and dad worked in a construction team. In addition to Chris, they had two younger sons and a daughter, so the father often worked as a taxi driver in his car.
They lived in a private house and had a small garden.
Soon the wedding took place. Modest and somewhat unusual. The guests were very different. On the part of the bride – a solid scientific environment, which at the beginning of the holiday was primly sitting in a mansion with stone faces, and on the part of the groom – simple, sincere people, who, however, quickly melted the ice of misunderstanding, and nothing prevented everyone from having fun together.
After the wedding, the newlyweds went to rented housing. Chris turned out to be a hardworking, independent and purposeful guy.
He had long been thinking about his future and persistently saved money for his own housing. He worked as a simple welder in a car service, but he was a professional.
That’s why he always had a lot of clients. Everyone wanted to get to him.
There were also part-time jobs, often in the evenings and on weekends.
Seeing this, Mary’s parents decided to step in and help their children with an apartment. They added money for the down payment, and soon Chris took out a mortgage.
Gwen and Edward were very happy for Mary and Chris. They decided that they would finally live happily in their own apartment and have grandchildren.
However, they did not hurry with grandchildren yet. Chris, as before, worked very hard, and Mary did not work a day – her diploma was gathering dust on the shelf.
At first she could not find a job and conditions that would suit her. Then she just stopped looking and began to live to her satisfaction, not at all embarrassed by the fact that her husband works alone, trying to earn as much as possible – after all, they paid the mortgage.
Even more, Mary did not hesitate to spend money on spas, fitness clubs and restaurants. She bought whatever she wanted and did not deny herself anything.
Chris loved her madly and tolerated everything…
Gwen tried many times to reason with her daughter, but all in vain. Mary disappeared all day long with her friends, having fun and relaxing, and Chris, coming home from work, saw a completely empty refrigerator and had to eat only semi-finished products.
What grandchildren are here! Mary was not interested in anything but entertainment.
Gwen felt very sorry for her son-in-law, who lost even more weight from such a life and began to look completely exhausted.
-“You bet!” she said to her husband, “working three jobs and not resting at all!
She was seriously worried about Chris. But no one could influence Mary, and Chris replied:
-It’s okay, Gwen, don’t worry. Mary and I, everything is fine.
And one day there was thunder. Chris was weak. The regime of work without rest and poor nutrition did their job.
Gwen and Edward rushed to visit him, while Mary was out on another night out.
When the mother called, she said that she was far away and would come to visit her husband tomorrow:
-And anyway, he is an adult, why visit her? He will come back, so I will see him.
Gwen was next to her son-in-law at the time of the conversation, and it cost her a lot of effort not to pretend that Mary was so indifferent to Chris, because he was already not well.
She smiled through the force and wished the guy a speedy recovery…
But the main “surprise” awaited him upon his return home.
Mary took the money he had saved for the next payment and, without telling anyone, went on a trip. She never returned to Chris again. When she returned, she called her mother and said that during the trip she met her fate and decided to leave Chris. I’m tired of him…
-Did you tell him? -her mother gasped, shocked to the core.
-No. I never did. If you want, tell me yourself… – the daughter said and hung up.
Mary’s parents thought for a long time what to do. Chris already felt not very well after recovery, and then such news.
They decided to help him: to give him money to pay the next installment, reimbursing the money that their daughter had taken for her parties.
They came together. They did not know how to say that Mary had left him, but Chris already knew. Mary did call him…
He sincerely thanked Gwen and Edward for their help, because without it he would have had to get into even more debt, and assured them that he was fine, but it was obvious that he was out of the question.
His appearance spoke for itself. He felt deeply unhappy and could not understand why Mary did this, because he forgave her everything and allowed her to live the way she wanted, putting all his time and energy on the altar.
He loved Mary so much, and she only used him…
But the guy just refused to understand it and all the time pleased himself with the illusion of a happy marriage.
When Gwen and Edward came out of the entrance, Mary’s mother just burst into tears from pity for Chris and shame for her own daughter, and Edward, playing with acorns, said that if she came and asked them for something, she would get nothing.
He does not want to help or even see her. They no longer have a daughter!
And Mary settled down quite well. She found a lonely businessman who was divorced.
-“That marriage was a mistake,” he told Mary, whom he fell in love with at first sight.
She knew how to impress. Chris ceased to suit her, he was boring, and her appetites were growing.
The girl was not going to work.
-“There’s another fool,” Mary smiled, depicting passionate feelings.
There was no love to speak of here. Only cold calculation. As long as the businessman arranges her and satisfies all her desires, she will be with him, and then…
-We’ll see,- Mary smiled smugly.
Chris took a long time to come to his senses after the divorce. Mary’s parents sometimes called him, asked how he was doing, helped as much as they could.
Gwen was sincerely worried, feeling guilty, for the way her daughter behaved, and for her daughter in general.
In addition, she loved Chris as her own son and wished him well. And Mary did not communicate with her parents, did not call and did not come.
An icy beauty, completely devoid of feelings. She loved only herself…
