I didn’t understand why my wife got so upset when she found out that my mother-in-law would soon visit us. However, everything became clear after her arrival.

When my mother-in-law announced that she planned to visit us, my wife and I were pleased. We lived quite far away, and her visits were rare, so this time we couldn’t say no.

When our children grew up, they became too busy with their own lives to visit their grandmother except during the holidays. My wife, however, grew a bit uneasy, recalling the previous situation when my mother-in-law visited her younger daughter, Martha.

A few days after that visit, Martha suddenly sent her mother back home, leading to a brief argument between them. As expected, my mother-in-law arrived with plenty of food and gifts.

At first, the atmosphere was pleasant and friendly, but soon everything changed as my mother-in-law began acting like the mistress of the house. From complaining about my morning coffee to reorganizing our home, nothing seemed to meet her standards.

Her constant criticism was getting on our nerves, and my wife and I found ourselves in the same situation as Martha.

We decided to send her back home. As expected, this caused outrage. After she left, the house grew quieter. A week later, while we still hadn’t spoken to my mother-in-law, Martha called to express her discontent with how we had handled the situation.

That evening, my wife and I reflected on why our parents become more demanding as they age. We can only hope that we won’t turn out the same way.
