Mum, this is my girlfriend, Emily Tom tried to sound casual, but his nerves still slipped into his voice. And, well, erm we sort of you know wed like to
Ive long known what it is you want, young man, his mum replied, giving Emily a thoughtful glance. But does the young lady want the same as you? Emily, dear, do you know my son well?
Oh, I know him all right, Emily replied without missing a beat. Like the back of my hand.
I beg your pardon? Mum was so surprised she even switched to a formal tone. Is that how young ladies speak these days?
Whats so odd? Its a common phrase in Englishyou know someone like the back of your hand. But enough about Tom. I think we should get to know each other. Who knows if well even get on?
What do you mean by that? Mum was caught off guard.
Well, Emily explained, seeing as well both be waiting up for Tom when hes out at night with his mates, and then well have to put up with him snoring in all sorts of states. We should see if were compatible.
Wait, why would I be involved? Mum tried to regain control of the conversation. Youll have your own room, surely I hope.
But youll be right outside, fretting. All mums do the same.
Oi! What on earth are you two talking about? Tom interjected, baffled by this strange exchange.
Be quiet! chimed in mum and Emily, voices perfectly in sync.
Now, Mrs. Smith, said Emily, turning back to Toms mum, I do have a question. Do you ever have rows? Tom dodges the subject every time I ask.
Rows? Surely not! Mums eyes widened. Do women even fight?
Oh, youd be surprised, Emily chuckled. Some wives really give their husbands what-for. Better watch out.
Heavens! Mum covered her face with her hands. What sort of talk is that? And such drama
Oh, go on, Emily leaned in confidingly, Surely youve felt the urge to give your husband a smack on the arm, or maybe even Tom when hes being cheeky?
Well Mum almost confessed, but caught herself. Absolutely not. Never.
I respect your desire to seem proper, Mrs. Smith, Emily smiled, but Im not sure I believe you. After all, being Toms mum cant have been easy. Tell me honestly, did you ever have to give him a little smack when he was a terror as a child?
Of course not! Mum said truthfully this time.
Hey! Tom started again, but was cut short.
Be quiet!
You made a mistake sparing him, Mrs. Smith, Emily teased, giving Tom a gentle pat. A lad whos always looking for mischief probably needed it. Still, your Tom is a good one, and theres hope yet. By the way, Mrs. Smith, shall we have a cuppa? Conversations always flow better over tea. I even brought a cake.
That evening, Toms dad came home from work, and before anyone could sit down, Mum announced, Darling! Our Tom is finally going to get married!
Good heavens! I dont believe it! Dad exclaimed, barely hiding his excitement.
Steady on! Im still thinking it over, Tom quickly corrected them.
No, son, Mum replied with a mock-stern tone. Youre getting married this time, for certain. And if you try to wriggle out of it, Ill just adopt Emily as my daughter instead.
Mum, shes hardly an orphan, Tom snorted. Shes got parents of her own.
Well, never mind then, Mum replied with mock severity. In that case, Ill take you back to the hospital, tell them youre not mine, and say they gave me the wrong baby. And your dad will back me up!
If I mustswear to it! Dad nodded and raised a joking fist at Tom.
And so, with tea, laughter, and honest talk, the Smith family discovered that a sense of humour and openness make it much easier to accept new beginnings. In the end, everyone learned that true belonging isnt just about bloodits created through kindness, understanding, and a willingness to welcome someone new into the family.
