How Greed Blinded Him and Ruined Everything
We Were Inseparable
Since childhood, I was very close to my cousin Robert.
We grew up like brothers, sharing joys and sorrows, getting into scrapes, studying, dreaming.
When his parents got divorced and his mother left with another man, Robert stayed with his father.
His father drank, took out his frustrations on Robert, sometimes hitting and belittling him.
Even though I was younger, I always stood up for him.
In the end, we both ran away from that nightmare—two of us fixed up an old attic in his grandmother’s house and moved in there.
It was our refuge.
We thought everything would only get better from then on.
But I didn’t know back then that greed could destroy a person.
He Even Envied Me
When I went to university, Robert was already working.
But when he saw me building my life, he decided to move to the city too and stay close.
We lived together again, sharing everything once more.
I worked part-time as a security guard to pay for my studies, and he got upset—claiming he couldn’t get a decent job because he didn’t have a degree.
I encouraged him to study, even if just through distance learning, but he refused.
Instead, he began to envy.
He started noticing how much money I had, what clothes I bought, where I went.
And inside him, jealousy simmered.
Greed Pulled Him Down
Robert wanted to have as much as I did.
But not through studies or honest work.
He got involved with a local gang—they were into shady business but made good money.
I knew he understood what he was getting into.
But the desire to be better than me and have more blinded him.
And then one day, I bought a car.
It was my first serious purchase, earned honestly.
I invited him along for a ride—just to have a look.
But he couldn’t hide his rage.
I saw hatred in his eyes.
It was unbearable for him to realize that I was moving forward while he was stuck.
That same day, he took out a loan and bought a wreck that didn’t last a month.
He became a person consumed by greed.
The Ending Was Predictable
He stopped caring about friends, family, himself.
He needed more, more, even more.
He sold out friendships, betrayed those who supported him, argued with his relatives.
He saw people not as individuals, but as competitors.
He destroyed himself.
Now he is completely alone.
Alone, like a broken-down car left by the roadside.
Like a racer who never reached the finish line.
Greed wipes everything away.
But at the end of this race, there are no winners.
