Greed Blinded Him and Destroyed Everything
We Were Inseparable
From a young age, I was incredibly close with my cousin, Henry.
We grew up like brothers, sharing joys and struggles, getting into trouble, studying, dreaming together.
When his parents divorced, and his mother left with another man, Henry stayed with his father.
His father drank, took out his frustrations on his son, hit him, and belittled him.
Even though I was younger, I always stood up for him.
Eventually, we both escaped from that nightmare—fixing up the old attic in his grandmother’s house and moving in there.
It became our sanctuary.
We thought everything would only get better from then on.
But I had yet to realize how greed can ruin a person.
He Even Envied Me
When I got into university, Henry was already working.
But after seeing how I was building my life, he decided to move to the city and stay close by.
We were living together again, sharing everything.
I worked part-time as a security guard to pay for my studies, and he got angry—complaining that no one would hire him for a decent job because he didn’t have a degree.
I encouraged him to study, even if it was part-time, but he refused.
Instead, he began to envy.
He started noticing how much money I had, what clothes I bought, and where I went.
Inside, his envy began to boil.
Greed Pulled Him Down
Henry wanted to have as much as I did.
But not through study and hard work.
He got involved with a local gang—they were into shady dealings but made good money.
I knew he understood what he was doing.
But the desire to surpass me and have more blinded him.
Then one day, I bought a car.
It was my first major purchase, honestly earned.
I invited him along just to go for a ride.
But he couldn’t hide his anger.
I saw the hatred in his eyes.
He couldn’t bear the thought that I was moving forward while he remained stuck.
That very day, he took out a loan and bought a wreck of a car that didn’t last a month.
He became a person obsessed with greed.
The Ending Was Predictable
He stopped thinking about friends, family, or himself.
He wanted more, more, and even more.
He sold out friendships, betrayed those who supported him, and fought with relatives.
He saw people not as people but as competitors.
He destroyed himself.
Now he is completely alone.
Alone, like a broken-down car left on the roadside.
Like a racer who never reached the finish line.
Greed wipes everything away.
But at the end of this race, there are no winners.
