So, Jane had just turned 60. Technically, it was time for her to retire, but she wasnt in any kind of rush. That day, after she finished her shift, she changed clothes and headed home. The rain was absolutely bucketing down, and of course, she didnt have an umbrella on her. She yanked her hood over her head and made her way to the bus stop, squinting through the downpour. Out of nowhere, she heard the sound of a baby crying and there, on one of the benches, was a tiny newborn, couldnt have been more than a few days old, just lying there.
Jane didnt even think twice she scooped up the little bundle and tried to calm him down, gently rocking him and whispering softly. Since the baby was soaked and shivering, she hurried back to the hospital where she worked and called for the paediatrician to check the baby over. Hes a boy, about two weeks old. He looks perfectly healthy. I cant imagine why anyone would abandon him. A child like this needs nothing more than love and plenty of cuddles, the doctor said, shaking his head.
Jane decided to take the late shift that night; she knew she wouldnt be able to sleep anyhow. Not long after, the police arrived and needed to take her statement. All the while, Jane didnt leave the babys side she held him tightly the whole time.
Two hours later, the police came back, and this time they had a young couple with them. The girl was in tears, and the lad looked like he might faint from worry.
Lets see him Maybe hes ours, the girl whispered with a trembling voice.
They pulled on hospital gowns and followed the nurse down to the childrens ward. The second she saw the little boy, the girl broke down and ran to him, scooping him up and sobbing with relief, holding him as though shed never let go. Jane was baffled, trying to make sense of what was happening, until a police officer took her aside and explained:
Emma and William were seeing each other behind their parents backs, since the families werent keen on them being together. Emmas parents just about tolerated it, but Williams mum made things really difficult and went out of her way to make Emma feel unwelcome. When their son was born, the young couple hoped Williams mum would soften up and accept the situation, maybe even share in some of the joy. But sadly, she was convinced Emma mustve been unfaithful, even though that wasnt true at all. One evening, she told them shed babysit so they could have a bit of time together and go see a film and then, while they were out, she left the little boy outside the hospital and disappeared.
So thats how it all unfolded. Chances are, that little lad will never see his grandmother again but at least his mum and dad have him back, and Jane was a bit of a hero that night, even if no one really noticed.
