How many times did I caution him against marrying her? Even just before the wedding, I practically begged him to reconsider. But did he take my advice to heart? He was head over heels, utterly smitten. And now, he finds himself reaping what he has sown.
It feels like only a short while ago that my son rang me up. I could tell, just from the tone of his voice, he was unwell. A mother always knows. My son asked if I could come to see him. He explained that his wife, knowing hed taken ill, had packed her bags and gone off to stay with her friends. There was no one left at home to make him a cup of tea or prepare some soup.
Whats more, she wouldnt even answer his calls. Although it was already quite late, I hurried over to his flat. On my way, I paused at the chemists and picked up some medicine. My mind wandered as I walked, thinking of her: how she could simply abandon her sick husband to go socialising. My boy was really unwell. When I saw the state he was in, I nearly rang for an ambulance, but he pleaded with me to wait.
He was flushed, burning up, and the flat was bare. Thankfully, Id brought medicine and a few groceries. I could barely contain my annoyance what sort of woman acts like that? Shed left her husband, poorly as he was, and there was nothing in the flat except her endless supply of slimming tablets and a cold echo in the fridge. I made a pot of tea for him and dashed out again to fetch some broth from the shop.
After some rest and a bit of food, he finally started to feel a little brighter. His fever began to subside. And then, around three oclock in the morning, “Miss Wonderful” returned home, reeking of gin. She must have had a splendid evening. She paid no heed to my remarks about the medication. I refrained from making a scene, only out of concern for my sons health. But for his sake alone, I kept the peace, though he himself looked as though he was not far off kicking up a fuss.
