Diary Entry 14th February
I still cant quite believe what happened today at Windermere. Id gone out early in the morning, lacing up my skates and gliding across the frosty lake, just soaking in the calm and bracing air. As I rounded a bend, I spotted something unusual near the reedsa trio of deer, clearly struggling and panicked, trapped on a patch of thin ice. Their hooves kept slipping, and they couldnt find a way back to solid ground.
Without thinking, I grabbed my ice pick from my backpack and carefully made my way across the slippery surface towards them. Every step was cautiousmy heart was pounding, and I was terrified the ice might crack beneath us. Once I reached them, I managed to loop a rope Id brought with me around the neck of the closest deer, gently coaxing it away from the fragile ice towards the safer, thicker part of the lake.
It was a tense few minutes that felt like ages, but after a good bit of effort, all three of them were finally released. When their hooves first touched the snow-dusted bank, they paused for a moment, almost as if to say thank you, and then dashed off into the woods. I stood there catching my breath, filled with reliefand a strange sense of accomplishment. After I untied the rope, I watched as their tails disappeared into the trees.
Later, someone whod just arrived happened to catch it all on video. I never expected what followed: the little clip ended up online, and within hours, people from all over England were sending messages of gratitude and praise for my act. Its odd seeing my name mentioned by strangers! Its humbling and a bit surreal.
I keep thinking nowif I hadnt gone out for a skate this morning, those deer might never have made it. Funny how the simplest choices can turn into something memorable. And next time, I hope those adventurous deer think twice before wandering onto the ice!
