**Diary Entry**
I never imagined one simple lie could shatter everything I believed in—especially a friendship as strong as mine with Jane. We’d been inseparable since uni days: studying together, late-night chats, trips, always there for each other. But one desperate choice changed it all.
Jane had become distant—always late, glued to her phone, nervous. I blamed work at first, but something felt off between her and her boyfriend, Daniel. They’d seemed perfect. Then one night, during our usual movie night at hers, she whispered:
*“I’m pregnant.”*
My breath caught.
*“What? Seriously?”*
*“Yes.”* Her voice shook, lips trembling. *“Daniel wants kids so badly. If I tell him the truth… he’ll leave.”*
A cold dread settled in me. Jane—strong, independent Jane—faking a pregnancy? I tried reasoning with her, but she dug in: *“It’s the only way to keep him.”*
At first, I played along. Then the inconsistencies piled up. No bump. Vague doctor visits. Dodged questions about scans, murmurs of a “complicated pregnancy” that didn’t add up. When I offered to come to an appointment, she paled. *“No, I don’t want you worrying…”*
I *knew* then. But I never expected the truth to unravel so brutally.
Daniel, clueless, planned a baby shower. Decorations, gifts, cake—everything perfect. Until *he* arrived: Dr. Thompson.
*“Thanks for coming, Doctor,”* Daniel said brightly, shaking his hand. *“Jane’s told us so much about you.”*
My stomach dropped. The doctor froze. His eyes locked on Jane—stern, uneasy.
*“Jane,”* he said quietly. *“It’s time to tell the truth.”*
Silence. Jane’s face went white. *“I… I’m not pregnant,”* she choked out. *“I’m sorry, Daniel. I was scared… scared you’d leave.”*
Daniel didn’t shout. His quiet voice cut deeper than any scream: *“You lied. You pretended to carry my child. You *betrayed* me.”*
The party died. Guests stood stunned. The doctor—who Jane had begged to cover for her—had finally refused to play along.
Daniel didn’t rage. He just said, *“Party’s over. Everyone leave.”* Cold. Final.
And me? I realised friendship can be a lie too. The person you trust most can turn out to be a stranger. Secrets always surface. No matter how hard you pretend, the truth catches up.
