Dont you see? Hell ruin your whole life, Aunt Lisa warned Natalie, shaking her head as she tried to dissuade her from taking brother Kieran under her wing.
Take it slow, love, think it through again, urged her aunt, her voice trembling with worry. What if you cant cope? Look at the kids todayyou’re barely nineteen yourself, and Kierans only thirteen. Thats the age boys start getting into trouble. If he goes off the rails, what will you do?
Natalies eyes flashed. I cant stand the thought of my own brother ending up in a childrens home, Aunt Lisa. I know it wont be easy, but I wont be able to sleep if Im constantly wondering whether hes safe, whether hes fed, whether anyones hurting him.
Their mother had died only weeks before. A thin cluster of relatives had gathered in the modest flat on Bethnal Green: two of their mothers sistersElizabeth and Irene a cousin with his wife, and Irenes sixteenyearold daughter Lucy. Two women from their mothers former workplace arrived with a family friend, Aunt Jane.
After the funeral, only the relatives remained to decide the childrens future. Natalies path seemed clear. At nineteen she had just finished her second year at university, held a scholarship, and would have to pick up parttime work. It would be hard, but she could manage.
Kieran, however, was a different story. No one in the extended family could accommodate a teenage boy.
Were already cramped, Aunt Lisa explained, gesturing around the twobedroom council flat she shared with her husband, two sons, and his motherinlaw. Where would we put another mouth?
Irene added, We moved out, but Boris fell back into drinking. He was sacked last week and wont be back for at least a month. My daughter and I lock ourselves in the bedroom at night. How can we possibly take a child into that chaos?
Their cousins brother answered bluntly, Weve got three of our own.
Thus, if Natalie couldnt secure guardianship, Kieran would be sent straight to the childrens home.
Kieran himself sat on a swing in the courtyard, his best friend Max perched beside him on a bench. The boys were silent.
Been talking about this long? Max asked.
Two hours, Kieran muttered. Natalie wants to become my guardian, but her aunts keep trying to stop her. They say Im a troublemaker and she cant handle me.
What do you think?
I dont know, Kieran replied, eyes fixed on the ground. I just dont want a home for orphans. I want to stay here, go to school, play football.
The aunts launched their final arguments, their voices thick with desperation.
Natalie, youre still young. You need to think about building a lifegetting married, having children. Kieran will be a weight around your neck. What bloke would want a girl with that kind of burden? Irene whispered, eyes darting. Just let him go to the childrens home. You can visit, maybe take him back for holidays. Were only looking out for you. Hell ruin you forever.
Seeing Natalies resolve, Aunt Lisa added, Sell this place, buy something modest for you and Kieran, and live off the difference while you study.
By evening the relatives drifted away. Natalie called Kieran back inside.
Come on, eat something decent. Youve been nibbling all day.
Kieran obliged, and Natalie sat opposite him, just as their mother had once done.
Alright, Kieran, well get through this, she said gently.
He nodded without looking up from his plate.
The next morning Natalie scoured the classifieds for work. With a secondyear economics degree, she sent out resumes for manager and accounting assistant roles, but received no replies. She lowered her expectations, applying for sales assistant positions. After two interviews, one employer seemed interesteduntil they learned she planned to continue her studies parttime.
Its only two exam periods a year; who can work then? they objected.
Disheartened, Natalie considered the only vacancy left: a cashier job at the supermarket next door. Their neighbour, Mrs. Hargreaves, assured her it would be easy to get.
On her way home, Natalie ran into her former maths teacher, Mrs. Olga Spencer, now the form tutor for Kierans class. Mrs. Spencer was aware of the familys plight and offered to help with the guardianship paperwork.
Theres a temporary admin post opening while our secretary goes on maternity leave. Its not permanent, but itll last three yearsjust enough for you to finish your degree. The pay is modest, but its right next to the flat, and youll have Kieran in sight all the time, she explained.
Natalie took the job, switched to parttime study, and managed a modest salary that, together with the small guardianship allowance, kept them afloat without poverty.
Kieran, a typical teenager, still clashed with his sister. He resented Natalies overprotectiveness, and she feared she couldnt keep him out of trouble. Still, they settled into a rhythm: Natalie cooked and washed, Kieran tidied the flat, took out the rubbish, washed his own dishes, and ran errands without complaint.
But Aunt Lisas warning about relationships proved true. Vadim, Natalies boyfriend of almost a year, grew increasingly frustrated.
I dont get why youve taken on this burden. I wanted a normal lifestudying, going out. When we were supposed to go on a weekend trip, you stayed behind with Kieran. I went alone, feeling like a fool. He invited me to his birthday at the cottage and you said no again. I cant keep living like this, he fumed.
The breakup left Natalie hurt, but she soon realized she didnt need someone who couldnt accept her family.
Kierans football talent blossomed. At fourteen his coach promoted him to the senior squad, and he began playing in both training games and away fixtures.
One Saturday they faced a team from nearby Sheffield. Natalie sat in the stands, cheering for her brother. He scored one of three winning goals, but in the final minutes he twisted his ankle badly.
Medical staff tended to him on the pitch, and the assistant coach, Igor, offered to drive them home.
I didnt know Kieran had such a young mum, Igor joked as they walked to the car.
Its not a mum, its a sister, Kieran corrected, a faint grin on his bruised face.
The next day Igor called Natalie to check on Kierans recovery. He called again, then again, eventually inviting her for coffee, then a proper date. Within a year they celebrated two milestones: Natalie and Igors wedding and Kierans admission to a prestigious sports college for Olympic hopefuls.
Life moved on, a blend of sorrow and joy, of hard choices and quiet triumphs, all playing out in the cramped flat on Bethnal Green, where a nineteenyearold sister fought to protect her thirteenyearold brother against a world that seemed intent on tearing them apart.
