For a family life to be comfortable, husband and wife must have trust in one another. When a man returns home only to meet with hostility and suspicion, it’s impossible to hope for a peaceful and harmonious existence. Over time, such an atmosphere leads only to trouble and eventually ruins the bonds between loved ones.
Many people find trusting others a challenge, and such feelings rarely come out of thin air. Most often, they are born from past experiences. If a woman once suffered betrayal, she may struggle to trust men in the future. She will be even more wary of someone who has already deceived her! Yet, this is something that can and must be set right.
Battling such doubts is a task not for everyone else, but for oneself. Allowing suspicion to fill your family home will only serve to poison it, bringing about worries that have no place there. One does not have to take everyone at their word, but learning to speak calmly and openly with each other is essential. Passing every day steeped in anxiety and tension helps no one.
I remember a chap I once worked with, Henry. Hed started noticing that his wife, Alice, was often out and about. At first, he thought little of it, but she began disappearing into town twice a week like clockwork. Gradually, worry wormed its way into his mind. Then, not long ago, Henry made a discovery that truly unsettled him. Looking for an old pair of brogues in his wardrobe, he found something he hadnt expected inside a box.
Inside one of Alices shoe boxes was a stash of banknotes. Henry was rather taken aback, for Alice never spoke of having extra money laid by. A few days later, the money had vanished from the box and Alice had gone out again. Henrys imagination could bear it no more; curiosity and concern got the better of him, and he resolved to see where his wife was slipping off to.
He soon discovered that Alice had gone straight across the street to the house opposite. Henry followed her inside. As he climbed the staircase, he heard the click of a lock on the first landing. He hurried up and knocked earnestly at the nearest door. To his surprise, it was not answered by a dashing stranger, but by an elderly woman.
It turned out that Alice had once encountered this old lady while returning from the greengrocer and had helped carry her heavy bags. Since then, she had taken to helping the old woman, who found shopping a real ordeal. Twice a week, Alice would go over to her neighbour to pick up her list and fetch everything the lonely lady might need.
Reflecting now, its a reminder that trust and understanding are the cornerstones of a happy English home, and that a little suspicion too quickly can cloud what is, in truth, a generous heart.
