He Became My Son-in-law for a Reason: The Truth Behind My Daughter’s Marriage

I didnt quite grasp why my daughter was so eager to marry her boyfriend, especially since theyd only known each other for about a month. For a moment, I wondered if she might be expecting, as I couldnt imagine another reason to move so quickly. But my daughter assured me that wasnt the casethey simply loved each other deeply and couldnt bear to be apart. I was relieved at that, really. Not everyone gets lucky enough to find such love.

Both families pitched in for the wedding expenses, and soon enough, we found ourselves at a lovely little ceremony. The guests were cheerful and full of laughter, but from the corner of my eye, I noticed the grooms mother sitting quietly, looking rather down in the mouth. At first, I assumed she disapproved of her sons choice and thought perhaps it was best not to ask. Still, something nagged at me, so after a while I went over and gently asked if something was troubling her.

She remained silent for a moment, then finally looked up at me with tears in her eyes and said, This wedding never should have happened. My son will only bring heartache to your daughterhe doesnt love her, not one bit. His heart still belongs to someone else. You see, his former girlfriend left him for his best mate. Hes only married your daughter to spite her. I told him not to, but the young rarely heed the voice of experience.

I listened and honestly thought it all quite far-fetched. I had asked my daughter several times if all was well, and she always assured me that everything was wonderful between them. At the time, I dismissed her mother-in-laws distress, assuming she simply objected to the match.

But only two months later, my daughter came back home in tears, suitcase in hand. Her husband had filed for divorce, admitting he was still in love with his ex and had only married for revenge. My daughter, he claimed, never made him happy. Now Im left with deep regret, wondering why I didnt intervene. The signs were there, and perhaps if I had trusted my instincts and listened a bit more closely, I could have spared her this pain.

Sometimes, in our rush to embrace what looks like happiness, we ignore the quiet warnings around us. Listening, truly listening, can save us from heartacheand thats a lesson Ill never forget.
