Good Job, Mate! Husband Spends Nights with His Current Wife and Days with His Ex

Splendid work! Husband is with his current wife by night, and with his ex-wife by day

I am 38, and for the past two years, Ive been living with a man who is five years older than me. His name is Edward. He was married before, with two children and an unemployed ex-wife, who rings up every evening wanting money or needing help with one thing or another.

Ive never been married before, and I dont have children. Some might say I dont understand what children or family mean. Thats not trueI know very well whats normal and whats not. It isnt usual to live with one woman as her husband and then keep running off to another.

Edwards ex-wife, Susan, seems determined to win him back. She calls daily, inventing a new crisis each time: a leaking tap, a missing cat, a broken kettle. Edward rushes to them straight after work, only returning when the sky is dark and the streetlamps are humming. We can’t spend holidays as a pair; just as we settle in, Susan rings, and off he goes again to extinguish another imaginary fire. But why does Edward always have to go?

Susan has a large family and a bevy of friends, all living locally in Leeds. The real reason is plain as day: she wants her ex-husband back. Im awfully tired of it. But what on earth am I supposed to do? Divorce him? Talking to Edward is like speaking through a fogmy words get swallowed up in the muddle and nothing ever changes.
