On June 6, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever named Charlie was playing fetch with his owners, Mary and James Sanders, when he suddenly got scared and ran off into the woods.
Since then, Charlie’s owners did everything possible to find him, including distributing flyers and contacting the local police for help.
It wasn’t until over three weeks later that New Jersey State Police officers Ryan Keller and Thomas Barnes received a call about a Golden Retriever spotted swimming in Barnegat Bay along the Jersey Shore. The dog needed urgent assistance to be rescued.
When officers tried to approach Charlie, he panicked and jumped further into the water. The officers used a Zodiac boat to navigate towards him, as he was about 75 yards from the shore. They carefully guided him towards land and lifted him onto a pier behind a boathouse. By the time Charlie was rescued, he had already swum nearly two miles across the bay.

Charlie was extremely tired when rescued, appearing malnourished and close to starvation.
Once on land, Charlie backed away and growled in fear at the officers. However, they kept him safe by their side until his family arrived. When the Sanders family reunited with Charlie, they were overwhelmed with relief and joy. Charlie, too, was overjoyed to see his beloved family again.
Such wonderful news… a brave little sweetheart. ❤❤
Charlie, just three years old, had been missing for more than two weeks. He radiated happiness upon being reunited with his grateful owners. Surely, Charlie learned an important lesson from this ordeal and will never run away from home again!
