Future Mother-in-Law Called Off Our Wedding, Blaming My Illness on Infidelity
Until recently, my life felt like a fairytale. I was with a man who loved me, felt the excitement of soon becoming a mother, and was eagerly preparing for my wedding. But one visit to the hospital turned my world upside down, leaving me in emptiness and despair.
My fiancé, Andrew, and I were making plans for our future: we rented a cozy apartment in Bristol and dreamed about our wedding. We spent evenings together, savoring each other’s warmth and silence. About a month before the celebration, I began to experience morning sickness. My heart whispered that it was the miracle I had dreamed of. However, I didn’t want to share with Andrew just yet—I wanted to surprise him and give him a moment of happiness. That day, I went to my parents’ to share the joy with my mom.
In the taxi, I felt dizzy, but brushed it off, thinking it was fatigue. Once home, my mum made me some chamomile tea, and I felt better, but that night, a fever gripped me like fire consuming me from within. Despite my resistance, my mum, ignoring my protests, called for an ambulance. The doctor who examined me became pale and delivered the verdict:
— Straight to the emergency room. Possible ectopic pregnancy.
Those words were like a thunderclap. I wanted so badly to give Andrew a child, and now my dream crumbled to dust, leaving only fear and pain.
I woke up in a hospital room after the operation, with a weary doctor looking at me with sympathy.
— I’m sorry, dear. We barely saved you.
It wasn’t until being discharged that I understood what he was sorry for. They’d saved my life, but took away the hope of ever becoming a mother. I couldn’t bring myself to tell Andrew the truth—the fear that he’d leave when he knew I couldn’t give him children gripped my throat. He loves kids so much! At home, I lied and said I went for a routine check-up. I don’t know if he believed me, but his mother, Tamara, definitely suspected something.
A week before the wedding, Andrew and I planned to take a break for some rest before the big day. But work dragged on—I was finishing an important project while Andrew handled things at home. Finally free earlier, I returned home, anticipating his smile. But as I crossed the threshold, I overheard part of a conversation that chilled my blood. Tamara’s voice boomed:
— I told you she still runs to that Steve! A week in gynecology, and you act like it’s nothing!
— Mum, it was just an examination… — Andrew tried to argue.
— Wake up! She had an abortion! Clearly, a botched one. I’m a woman, I know why someone gets admitted to the hospital. You’re a blind, lovesick fool! The wedding has to be canceled. It’ll be a disgrace, not a celebration!
The room spun, and I fainted. When I came to, I saw Andrew and his mother. Tamara forced a smile:
— Awake, dear? Have some sweet tea. You and Andrew need to talk. I’ll leave you two.
I was paralyzed with horror, and Andrew immediately spoke:
— Helen, how are you? We need to discuss things. We’ll have to postpone the wedding. You’re too weak. Get better first, then we’ll marry.
— Andrew, are you serious? This isn’t about my health…
— What do you mean?
— I heard your conversation! You also believe I had an abortion due to infidelity?
He looked away, and it was worse than any words.
— I love you, so I’m willing to forgive. Everyone makes mistakes. But I need time.
— Forgive?! I never cheated on you! I had an ectopic pregnancy and nearly died! I hid it to spare you pain. And you’re leaving me because of your mother’s nonsense?!
— I know Steve still loves you. He told me himself. Maybe you gave in to old feelings…
— That never happened!
— Then why didn’t you tell me the diagnosis?
— I was afraid of losing you! Now I can’t give you a child!
— Helen, I’m sorry, but I can’t believe you. I need to think. We’ll postpone the wedding, and I’ll stay at my parents’.
He packed up and left without a backward glance. My pain, my health—it all meant nothing to him. Fictional suspicions consumed him. This was the end. My world collapsed in an instant.
Now at his parents’, Tamara will poison his mind completely. I’m left alone—without a fiancé, without a child, without hope. How do I move forward when everything I cherished has turned to ashes? I don’t know.
