I nearly collapsed.
A swift search proved it real—Pembroke Estates, a respected property firm in London. Trembling, I dialled the number.

“This—this is Emily Whitaker. I’ve just received—”
“Ah! Mr. Pembroke’s been expecting you.”
Moments later, a warm voice greeted me. “Miss Whitaker. Thank you for ringing.”
We spoke at length. He shared how his father had once managed a grocers himself, drilling into his children that kindness outweighed all riches. “He forgets much now,” Arthur said quietly, “but he remembers *you*. Calls you his ‘checkout angel.’”

Arthur himself welcomed me—younger than I’d pictured, sharp-eyed but warm, dressed more for a country stroll than a boardroom. He showed me round, introduced my colleagues, then led me to the courtyard garden.
There, on a wrought-iron bench, sat Reginald.
The old man from the shop.
