Ever since our son started dating Monica, all I hear him doing is rebuking his father and me. It’s all because Monica’s parents gave the young couple a trip abroad for their engagement party, and my husband and I only got a set of towels. I didn’t hear any outrage from Monica herself, but my son said he was ashamed of us.
Just two months after the wedding, Monica’s parents helped the young family buy a car. We were bad again, again doing everything not enough. No matter how hard we tried to please, even the promise that our apartment would one day go to them did not impress my son very much.
And then recently, disaster struck-Monica was in a car accident with her new car. She has many fractures and injuries, and her family, of course, pays for her hospital stay, a nurse, and rehabilitation. I check on my daughter-in-law too, try to help her in any way I can, and she looks grateful and happy when I come over. But it still doesn’t stop my son from being angry with me. He thinks only money can show the power of our love and care. He also has a way of saying, “But if I had an accident, you couldn’t do anything for me, you’d only go into debt!”
I don’t understand how my son’s attitude toward us has changed so much. His wife is nice and supportive, his matchmakers are also normal people, I have never heard them say anything to us about money, and my son has never had enough.
