Since I was a little girl, my parents told me that no one ever truly needed me and that I was good for nothing.
They say that family ties are the closest of all, especially those with your mother. After all, it’s mothers who carry a child for nine months, endure the pain of childbirth, lose sleep night after night, and devote themselves entirely to their children’s well-being.
To some extent that may be true, but not in my case. My mother and I were entirely different souls. We could never find common ground, nor did she ever offer me her support. Any time I became passionate about something, she would immediately douse my spirits with her negativity.
To my mother, I was a foolish, unremarkable girl who could do nothing right and never would. I never understood why she treated me so, but as soon as she needed something, she would turn straight to me for help. Yes, the daughter who supposedly had no worth and could achieve nothing. Thankfully, at least my father showered me with love and encouragement.
So, in time, I made the decision to leave our little town and move to London, seeking a brighter future and my own happiness. Upon hearing my plans, my mother flew into a fit of rage. She said all sorts of things, her chief concern being to keep her obedient servant at home. But I resisted her constant attempts at emotional blackmail and carried out my intentions as I wished.
And so, here I am. I live in London, with a spacious flat of my own, my own business, two children, and a wonderful husband. My mother always said I could achieve nothing, but I proved her wrong. Anyone who can shield themselves from such voices and believe in their own worth can succeed, just as I did.
