A beautiful thirty-five-year-old woman with wistful eyes gazed back at Alice from the mirror. She still couldnt quite fathom what modern English men really wanted. It was a shame no one taught that in university. After all, what good was graduating with first-class honours?
Alice had always dreamed of having a family, a loving husband and childrenpreferably three. Her own parents were her shining examplethe very picture of domestic bliss. Eager not to miss out on happiness, Alice felt in a rush to settle down.
She met her husband, William, during their years at university. Charming, athletic, and quick-witted, he was popular with everyone and could light up any gathering. Their paths crossed at a house party, and they were instantly drawn to each other. William had moved to London from another town to study, while Alice still lived at home with her parents.
Just six months later, Will proposed, and Alice happily accepted. They wed after finishing their degrees. Will seemed the perfect husbandattentive, caring, and always full of laughter. He landed a job as an engineer at a gas company, while Alice took up a position as a bank specialist.
Not long after their wedding, Alice discovered she was expecting. Will, however, was less than thrilled.
How did this happen, Alice? You said everything was under control.
I dont know, Will, Alice confessed, honestly rattled by his disapproving tone. Does it matter so much? We always wanted children. Perhaps this is meant to be.
Dont be daft, Will snapped. Its not fateits carelessness. Weve only just started our jobs. Nows the time to focus on our careers, not changing nappies.
Alice bit back tears, blindsided by his reaction.
Ali, Will said more gently, putting his arm around her shoulders, maybe we you know dont have to rush into things. Theres plenty of time.
Stunned, Alice stared at her husband.
Dont even think about it! she exclaimed. If youre not happy, I wont force you. The choice is yours.
Alice dashed out of the flat, wandering the streets for hours as her cherished dream of a big, happy family began to crumble.
For several days, Alice and Will barely spoke. Eventually, he apologised and said hed had time to think and was glad he was going to be a father. Their happiness knew no bounds. Eight months later, their son, Anthony, was born.
Motherhood brought Alice real joy. She loved taking care of Anthony, keeping their home tidy, and cooking special meals for Will. When Anthony turned three, Alice returned to work, sending her son to nursery.
Alice felt as though she floated through life, convinced she was the luckiest woman in England. The many friends who gathered at their place seemed to prove it. University mates and their families often filled their home with chatter and laughter. One day, Alice overheard Will talking with his friends.
Will, youve done well for yourself, said one mate. Your wifes lovely, clever, hardworkingand she keeps the house spick and span. Not to mention her cooking!
Too right, agreed another. Mine only ever nags for money and gets on my nerves.
Thats because Im quite the catch myself. Thats why Alice is such a gem, Will boasted.
The friends roared with laughter, but out of earshot, their wives often confided the opposite to Alice.
Sometimes, even when you do everything right, life takes unexpected turns. Alice learned that happiness cant be measured by appearances, praise from others, or even the number of dreams come true. True contentment often lies in accepting life as it is, appreciating the love you give and receive, and recognising that your value shines from within.
