The pensioner said the last time she saw her son was more than six years ago.
How long has it been since your son last spoke to you? I gently asked my neighbour. At that moment, I felt my heart shatter into pieces.
Its been six years since I last saw him, she spoke softly, her hands trembling slightly. When he first left with his wife, he would ring now and then, even just to say hello. But not long after, he stopped calling at all. I remember buying him a cake for his birthday one yearI went round to see him and Her voice broke. She lowered her eyes, wiping away a tear.
What happened then? I asked quietly.
My daughter-in-law opened the door and told me I wasnt welcome, she whispered, pain etched into her face. My son said nothing, just looked at me as though Id done something wrong, then turned away. That was the last I ever saw of him.
He never called after that? I struggled to believe what I was hearing.
I phoned him once when I decided to sell the three-bedroom flat and move somewhere smaller. Naturally, I gave him some money from the sale. He came round, signed the papers, took the money, and Ive not heard a word since.
Do you feel very lonely, or have you come to terms with it? I asked, my voice barely louder than a whisper.
I can manage, she replied, managing a faint smile. When I was young, I was left alone with my son after my husband left me for another woman. I brought my boy up single-handedly, filled his life with love and care. Later, he told me he wanted to rent his own place. At first I was gladthought perhaps he was growing up, starting to think about his own future.
But it turned out there was another reasonhis girlfriend. She was adamant they needed a place of their own so that no one would meddle in their lives. Not long after, she found out she was pregnant.
You tell me all this so calmly, I said, surprised at her stoicism. Dont you feel resentful that your sons abandoned you in your old age?
Im used to it now, she answered with a resigned sigh. I actually enjoy living in a new flat. I have enough money for everything I need. Every morning I wake up, put the kettle on, and sit on the balcony with a cup of tea. I like watching the city wake up. When I was younger, all I dreamed of was a good nights sleep, because I had to work back-to-back shifts. I imagined Id grow old surrounded by loved ones, but it seems I was meant to be on my own.
Why not get a pet? They say its nicer with two in the house, I suggested gently.
You know, love, even cats will leave their people one day. And I couldnt take on a dogI might not wake up tomorrow, and I couldnt bear the thought of leaving anyone behind I couldnt care for. Ive made enough mistakes already…
She tried to hold herself together, but in the end, she couldnt hold back the tears any longer.
