The dogs laboured breaths and the mans muffled sobs were the only sounds in the room. The old man couldnt bear to say goodbye to his Molly. He wept softly.
Daniel remembered their first meeting just three days earlier. The elderly gentleman had brought in his nine-year-old spaniel for the first time. She hadnt been able to stand for two days, and her owner was distraught. He told Daniel Molly was all he had left in the world.
The examination revealed a severe infection. Without immediate, expensive treatment, she would die in agony. “If you cant afford the care,” the vet had said, “the only humane option is euthanasia.” Only later did Daniel realise how crushing those words had been.
With shaking hands, the old man left crumpled banknotes on the table before gently lifting his dog.
