During university, Mark and Angelina were close friends and everyone expected their relationship to lead to marriage—until, after graduation, Angelina said something that left Mark stunned.

There comes a time in some relationships when, without warning, one person feels their feelings just fade away. Sadly, thats exactly what happened to me. My name is Mark Turner, and Id never dated anyone until I turned seventeen. Although plenty of girls showed an interest in me, I decided to devote my time to bettering myself and studying hard. My dream was to become a surgeona path that demanded absolute commitment.

It was only after Id started at university, following persistent encouragement from my mum, that I started considering romantic relationships at all. Eventually, someone truly caught my eye. Her name was Sophie, and as fate would have it, we ended up in the same seminar group. Sophie looked properly surprised when I first approached her since I rarely spoke to girls and mostly stuck to my close mates.

We started chatting now and then, and I even plucked up the courage to ask her out to dinner a few timesa move she welcomed with visible delight. Bit by bit, our friendship blossomed into an unmistakable romance, and we soon admitted openly that we were seeing each other.

My mum was over the moon. Shed secretly worried Id end up alone, focusing too much on my studies. Unfortunately, not long after we graduated, Sophies feelings towards me seemed to fizzle out, something that, while painful, is more common than people like to admit. The day I realised things had changed for her was incredibly hard to stomach, and I struggled to find my footing after what felt like my first taste of heartbreak.

Although I was already a grown man by then, it was the first time Id ever experienced the sting of rejection. Looking back, Ive learnt that life doesnt always follow the map we draw in our heads. Sometimes, losing what you wanted most teaches you to value yourself beyond someone elses affection.
