A dog visits the cemetery every day to see its owner, digging at the earth. Everyone assumed the animal was simply grievinguntil they discovered the horrifying truth.
The dog arrives each morning without a lead or collar, as if it knows the way by heart. The cemetery staff have grown accustomed to the sight: a lean Belgian Shepherd with alert ears and keen, intelligent eyes.
Once, she was a police dog, partnered with an officer named James Whitmore. For years, they worked side by sidechases, arrests, endless hours of training. To her, he wasnt just a handler but a companion, sharing every danger, exhaustion, and triumph.
A year ago, James died in the line of duty. His funeral was well-attended, full of solemn respect. Since then, the dog has come to his grave daily, digging a shallow pit before the headstone. She lies there, nose pressed into the soil as if catching a fading scent.
Occasionally, someone tries to take her awayvolunteers, kind-hearted passersby, even Jamess former colleagues. But if she escapes, she always returns. She sits, sleeps, sometimes whines softly, but never leaves her spot.
Most assume its griefthat she misses him, trying in some way to reach him. But the terrible truth emerges one day when an old colleague of Jamess visits the cemetery. He knows this dog, and if shes digging, theres a reason. He steps closer and notices she isnt scratching directly beneath the headstonejust slightly to the side.
The next day, he returns with a shovel. When the caretaker protests, he says, If Im wrong, Ill fill it back in.
The earth is softer than it should be for an old grave. Within half an hour of digging, the edge of fabric appears. When they unwrap it, the onlookers freeze: inside is a mans bodyno coffin, just civilian clothes. His hands and face are bound, marks of a ligature around his neck.
Police arrive swiftly. The victim turns out to be a witness from one of Jamess cases. After his death, someone used the funeral as cover to hide the body, betting no one would ever suspect.
No oneexcept the dog. One final time, she does what she was trained to do: uncover the truth.
