So, Lucy became an orphan when she was just four years old. She never really remembered the moment when her mum was struck by a neighbours car. Her dad pretty much gave everything just to look after her, but life wore him down, you know? He aged well before his time and basically just scraped by. Lucy never went to see her dad, not even once. Once she married, she got swept up in her own world. Every now and then shed ring him, but that was about it.
Her husband, Simon, wasnt shy about how he felt. Hed grumble whenever Lucy sent any money to her dad, saying, Dont waste our cash on a useless old man. Her dad always hoped Lucy would help him out in his old age. One of his neighbours suggested he should go to court and ask for support from Lucy, saying shed probably not think less of him. When the court day rolled round, Lucy met him at the doors with tears streaming down her face.
Dad! Have you got so fed up waiting for me, that youve taken me to court? she sobbed.
Lucy, love, I havent had so much as a penny for a loaf of bread in two days, he said. I believed youd keep your word. Maybe I did a poor job raising you
Lucy answered, You knew I had a job! Besides, Simon used to buy you groceries and send you money.
Right then, Simon chimed in, looking annoyed. Stop the guilt trip, mate. I send you money every month, but you werent meant to use it for nights out.
Lucy broke down and turned away, barely able to get her words out. Ive got something you need to hear.
Lucy turned to face him, wiping her tears away.
Back when your mum was still alive, her dad started gently, I came home after work and found her sat in the kitchen lost in thought. There was this box sitting beside her, and inside was a tiny girl. Your mum found her abandoned near the shipping containers. We decided to bring her up as our own daughter. Lucy, that was you. From that moment, you were ours. I loved you from the bottom of my heart. Please forgive me, my girl.
He withdrew the court case. During that chat, Lucy found out Simon had never actually gone to see her dad. Hed wasted the money on dodgy parties, nights on the town, and gambling. Lucy was devastated to realise shed given years to someone who never cared. She packed up and moved in with her dad. Now, theyre finally happy together.
