Emily lost her parents when she was just four. She couldnt quite recall the day her mother was struck by the neighbours motorcar. Her father sacrificed everything for her. Lifes hardships weighed heavily upon him, and he grew old before his time and barely managed to get by. Emily never visited her father once she married and settled into her own routine; she made the odd telephone call, but little else. Her husband always complained that spending money on a good-for-nothing old man was a waste.
Her father, for his part, hoped that in his twilight years he might depend on Emily for a bit of support. A neighbour suggested he take the matter to court for maintenance. He hesitated, but was told his daughter wouldnt think badly of him. On the day at the courthouse, Emily saw her father and greeted him, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Dad! Were you so tired of waiting for me that you had to bring me to court? she said.
Emily, Ive not had a penny for bread in days. I trusted youd keep your word. Perhaps I raised you poorly he replied.
You know Ive always been busy with work. My husband used to buy food for you and send money as well, Emily insisted. At that, her husband cut in: Stop trying to twist things. I give you money every month. Its not meant for you to squander on fun and games.
Emilys tears fell again as she turned aside, but her father called her back. Theres something important you need to know, he said, and Emily listened.
When your mother was still alive, he told her quietly, I came home from work and found her sat in the kitchen, deep in thought. There was a parcel beside her. Inside was a little girl. Your mother found you abandoned near the cargo yard. We decided, then and there, to raise you as our own child. Emily, that little girl was you. Ive always loved you as my daughter. Forgive me, my dear.
He withdrew the lawsuit after that. During talks, Emily learned her husband had never once visited her father, instead spending Emilys money on his own amusements, nights out, and gambling. Heartbroken that shed poured so many years into a man unworthy of her, Emily moved back in with her father. Now, they share quiet happiness together.
