Since I was the one who left the family for another man, and I was the reason our marriage ended, Tom felt I owed it to him to make up for his broken heart. He refused to let me take our son with me, andto be honestmy son wanted to stay with his dad anyway, not with me. It hurt, but I couldn’t persuade him or just take him away against his will. We sorted everything out rather quickly: they let me go, and in return, I sent them money once or twice a month.
Back then, my ex-husband worked and earned a decent wage, but when he realised I was fairly well-off, and my new partner chipped in as well so our son wouldnt go without, Tom decided to quit his job and simply live off our money.
As our son grew older, his dad completely spoiled himtakeaways all the time, skipping school whenever he fancied, holidays abroad, and ridiculously expensive gadgets. Over time, my son developed a dismissive attitude towards me and started seeing me less and less. No matter what I bought for him or did for him, Dad always managed to outdo me, even though he was spending my money to do it. By the time he was eleven, he didnt even wonder how his dad had so much cash when his dad was always at home and never worked.
My current husband suggested maybe I was sending them too much money. Wed also started thinking about university for my son and figured itd be better to start saving for that, rather than letting my ex spend everything on nonsense. So, I spoke to my ex in person and told him that after supporting them for years, it was time for him to take on the expenses, and Id look after our sons future instead.
He immediately told me what a terrible mother and wife I was, and threatened to take me to court for child maintenance, claiming Id never actually paid them a penny, which was utter rubbish.
I spoke to solicitors and they said not to worry about his threats and to simply ignore him, as he had no leg to stand onhe hadnt worked for years and had just been living off my money. But even so, I still feel like Im the one losing out. Now my son resents me even more, thinking I dont want to help his dad.
