My daughter came over for the weekend to do some shopping for me, and I decided to ask her, “Can I stay with you for the winter? The gas bills are quite high, and I don’t have the strength to chop wood anymore.” My daughter replied, “Mum, where would you stay, in the flat? Once I have a house, you can move in with me.”
I wouldn’t wish such a situation on anyone.
I want to share the pain I feel. I became widowed at a very young age, just 26 years old. My husband left me with two small children. My son was three, and my daughter was just one. I dedicated my entire life to them. They needed care, clothing, and education. But I had no choice; I had to manage on my own.
I worked a full-time job, and after that, I was a homemaker and gardener. Living in the countryside, money was always tight. I mowed the meadow myself and chopped wood for the fire. What else could I do with no husband around?
As my children grew up, they moved to the city.
When I was younger, I still maintained the home. When the grandchildren visited, they enjoyed fresh vegetables and milk. I saved my pension and gave it to the children.
Now, as age catches up, I can hardly do anything and can barely walk. Winters have been the toughest.
My daughter came for the weekend to shop for me, and I asked her again, “Can I stay with you for the winter? The gas bills are steep, and I can’t chop wood.”
She replied, “Mum, in the flat? When I have a house, then you can come.”
When I couldn’t walk anymore, my neighbors reached out to my son. He said he was very busy, his mother-in-law was also ill, and he didn’t have time to come…
I asked the neighbors to call my sister. She came right away and took me in. Thanks to her, I’m still here.
It’s been a few months, and my children still haven’t been in touch.
When I was younger and healthier, they needed me, but now they’ve forgotten they even have a mother.
I don’t wish this upon anyone. Where did I go wrong? When did my children become so indifferent?
I urge everyone reading this: cherish your parents. No one in this world will love you so unconditionally and sincerely!
