Auntie Comes to Stay, Wife in Tears: Robert’s Nighttime Surprise, Family Turmoil, and the Unwelcome Revelation That Changes Everything

Auntie Visiting, Wife Weeping

Robert was woken abruptly by the sound of the doorbell. Beside him, his wife was just stirring from sleep. He gently touched her shoulder.
Darling, stay in bed, Ill see who it is, he whispered, slipping out of bed and tiptoeing towards the door.

Whos knocking at this hour? he muttered softly as he peered through the peep hole.

As he opened the door, he was met by his Aunt Margaret, standing on the step with a massive suitcase at her feet. Behind her, her husband, Uncle Stanley, shuffled nervously.

My dear nephew! Aunt Margaret exclaimed, her voice ringing out in the silent house. Arent you pleased to see me? Come now, give your auntie a proper hug! She swept Robert into an enthusiastic embrace, nearly squeezing the breath out of him.

So much for a peaceful evening, Robert thought wryly, wrestling Margarets bags down the hallway.

The rest of the night passed in disarray. Aunt Margaret flatly refused to sleep on the sofa, insisting it was unbearably lumpy. She commented to Robert that perhaps he ought to tuck her in himself, hinting that a bit more hospitality wouldnt go amiss.

Roberts wife, Emily, was left speechless by it all. In less than an hour, Aunt Margaret had managed to turn the entire flat upside down. Eventually, everyone settled for the nightMargaret and Stanley commandeered the master bed, leaving Robert and Emily resigned to the uncomfortable sofa.

How long do you think theyll be staying? Emily whispered as she poured Roberts tea the next morning.
No idea, he replied. Ill ask when I get home from work.

Emily, tense from the incessant snoring drifting from the bedroom, said, Robert, Im really not comfortable with them. Can you try to come home early?
Ill do my best, he promised, and hurried out.

When Robert returned from work, he found the table set as though for Christmas dinner.
Come in, dear boy, time for a proper family feast! Aunt Margaret called out from the kitchen.
Emily leaned over and whispered, Thank goodness youre home.

As they all sat down, Robert asked politely, So, Aunt Margaret, how long are you planning to stay?
Already trying to get rid of us? Margaret sniffed, turning to Stanley. You see how were treated.
Honestly, Auntie, youre welcome here as long as you like! Robert responded, flustered.

Robert, were staying for good, Aunt Margaret announced firmly. Weve sold our house in Bournemouth. Youre the only family weve got left. Surely you wouldnt toss your own aunt out on the street? Theres not much time left, and I hope you dont mind putting up with us. With a dramatic sigh, she dabbed at her eye with a napkin.

Robert was stunned into silence, and Emily left the table in tears. The room was filled with awkward quiet, broken only by the clinking of Uncle Stanleys fork as he cheerfully finished his salad.

And you! Margaret jabbed a finger at Stanley, All you ever do is eat. You could at least join the conversation.
I quite agree with you, dear, Stanley said calmly.

You see, Robert, hes hopeless! I have to handle everything in this family, said Margaret, rolling her eyes. What sort of man is that? And what about you? Are you happy, my boy?
Stay as long as you wish, Robert managed to say, just as he heard Emily sobbing in the next room.

Robert picked at his food without enthusiasm while Margaret and Stanley dug in as if they hadnt eaten for a week.

Finally, as she finished her roast, Aunt Margaret leaned back and said, Im stuffed. Robert, I was only joking. Were only here for a hospital check-upthree days, thats all. Youve managed brilliantly. I could see you were worried, but you kept your chin up. You remembered what family means. When Im gone, the flats yours, for you and Emily. Youre all we have.

A wave of relief swept over Robert and he smiled brightly.
Aunt Margaret, youd better outlive us all! he joked.

During those three days, Emily became a bundle of nerves, constantly criticised by Margarether soups were too bland, the chops too tough, the washing hung all wrong, and the floor not as clean as it should be.

As they packed to leave, Margaret whispered conspiratorially to Robert, How on earth did you end up marrying such a sensitive girl? Is she expecting? Shes always in tears.

When the door finally shut behind them, Emily twirled around the living room in delight.
Maybe they wont come back! she said, hope shining in her eyes.
I wouldnt count on it, Robert replied, chuckling. I think Aunt Margaret rather liked it here!
I cant take it any more! Emily groaned.

Suddenly, the bell rang again.
Not again! Robert jumped up, only to realize it was the alarm clockhis morning wake-up. He relaxed and smiled, ready to greet a brand new day.

And as Robert rose to face the morning, he realisedsometimes, family can be both a blessing and a trial, but in the end, patience and kindness hold us together, no matter how chaotic life gets.
