The boys name was Oliver. He was ten.
Long ago, an elderly homeless man named Harold had found him as a baby beneath a bridge over the River Thames in London. Oliver was lying in a battered washing-up bowl, left there after a particularly nasty rainstorm, with an old red wristband on his arm. Beside him, a soggy note read: Please look after him. His name is Oliver.
Harold, who was no stranger to the streets himself, scooped up the child, warmed him as best he could, and shared whatever pie crust or day-old sandwich he could rustle up. Hed often say, If you ever find your mum, forgive her. No one gives up a child without pain.
Years passed, and Harolds health took a nosedive. Oliver started asking for spare change and doing odd jobs, which one day led him to a lavish wedding at a country manor near Windsor. Someone handed him a plate piled high with food.
As the bride appeared, Oliver came to a standstill. On her wrist was the very same red band.
He edged over and quietly asked if she was his mother.
The woman blanched. At seventeen, shed given birth in secret, terrified of her familys reaction, and left her baby by the river, trusting someone kind would find him. Shed spent years searchingnever finding a trace.
The groom halted the ceremony. He announced he was choosing not just her, but her whole past. If the boy was her son, then hed consider him his as well.
Then he dropped another bombshell: Harold, the kindly old man whod raised Oliver, was actually his biological fathersomeone he himself had lost touch with years ago. The very same chap who had saved Oliver.
So, the wedding went on. But first, everyone headed straight to the hospital to see Harold.
